Maui Luau FAQs Answered

What is a Luau?

A luau is a traditional Hawaiian gathering and feast. It has three main elements: traditional Hawaiian feast, mele (song) and hula (dance). The first recorded luau was held by King Kamehameha II in 1819. Today families in Hawaii will sometimes celebrate special occasions with luaus. These are however private and not open to the public.

Is a luau authentic?

Commercial operators have stepped in and organize luaus for tourists to attend. Typically they are held at or near resorts next to the beach with sunset views. They will include a meal of traditional Hawaiian foods (including roasted pig). Typically drinks are included (Mai Tai, Pina Colada, Blue Hawaiian etc). After-dinner entertainment will include various hula dances, perhaps a fire or knife dancer etc. Are they authentic? Well, considering that they are a commercial business, they are okay. Definitely check out reviews on Trip Advisor, the Maui Time’s ‘Best of Maui’ section and other review sites to see what others have thought. Additionally we have a great concierge (Concierge Connection) that can recommend a Luau near you, and help with great seats.

Should you book a Maui luau?

It depends what you are expecting. If you want to try authentic Hawaiian foods and enjoy a Hawaiian-esque show, book a luau. The food is usually very good, and I am not sure where else to go for traditional roast imu pig (it is so good). However,  Unfortunately an old favorite, the Ulalena show in Lahaina, – a great indoor show, depicting the history of the Hawaiian islands with great live music and dance closed in 2018. Many Luaus  (The Old Lahaina Luau for one) give a great narration explaining the history of the islands..

What is the best luau on Maui?

I recommend seriously considering the luaus near your condo. Keep in mind the free drinks and how far you will need to drive after the luau. Maui Police cracks down on impaired driving, so unless you have a designated driver, plan on taking a cab. Uber is also now on Maui. Remember that the drive from Lahaina to Kihei/Wailea can take an hour in post-luau traffic (and that’s if there is no accident on the two-lane highway).

If you prefer a sit-down dinner, check out The Feast at Mokapu Lūʻau at the Andaz in Wailea.  Pricy but Amazing from $140 for children to $363 for permium adult seating) Mostl other luaus on Maui are buffet-style which is nice as you get to pick and choose what you want to eat. The Old Lahaina Luau consistently rates well. The Grand Luau at Honua’ula (Grand Wailea) and Te au Moana (Wailea Marriott) are good South Maui options.

For the most reasonably priced Luau  $100-$200 - though without a view or served meal, we love the Luau at South Maui Gardens (amazaing food trucks and the Lahaina Birds! too). Unfortunately that show was recently cancelled. For those of you wishing to experience a similar hula performance nearby, we recommend Gilligan’s Island Luau (at the Maui Nui golf club) which offers an excellent show by the same hālau, Manutea Nui E that performed at South Maui Gardens, and is comparable in both location and price from $109 for children & $159 for adults - but this one has a view and dinner.

What is the best place to buy luau tickets?

The cost is anywhere from $150-$430/adult. Children usually get in at a reduced rate. Tips are extra (expected and appreciated). You can book tickets directly from the luau organizers (online or at the resorts). Remember, most luaus do not run daily, you will want to pre-book tickets to avoid disappointment.

If you are considering the Grand Luau (Grand Wailea), buy your discounted tickets at Costco and then phone the resort to reserve your seats.

Where you sit at a luau is important. The right seats can insure a much better experience. For that reason we recommend using our concierges. They know all the luaus intimately and in talking with you about your expectations can recommend the best for what you want. You’ll be able to see and hear the show, sit on the ground traditional style at low tables or standard tables for just you or with a group. They earn a small commission for doing this but the cost you pay is no more than you would pay directly to the event – you’ll be much happier.

There are also time share stands that will sell you heavily discounted tickets (in return for attending one of their time share presentations). This is one way to save money however ask yourself: are you willing to give up several hours of your vacation in a time share presentation and do you have the willpower to say ‘no’ to their sales pitch?

What to wear to a luau?

Dress code is Hawaiian casual: a nice Aloha shirt with shorts/khakis, an Aloha dress for the ladies. Most luaus have lei available for purchase. Also most have a professional photographer present – a great opportunity for a family picture!

Where to park?

Double check this when you make your reservations. At the Grand Wailea for instance, valet parking is included in the price of the tickets. However, you will want some change to tip the valet.

Golf on Maui is one of the best Maui Activities

Golf on Maui is one of the best Maui Activities

I thought it would be a perfect time to talk a little about golf on Maui. As we all know, Maui has perfect weather year round (the high temps range from 80 – 89 depending on the month) so it is very easy to pack your sticks and play a few rounds while on vacation on Maui.

Golf on Maui is one of the best Maui Activities

Kapalua may be known for the Plantation Course (home of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions) and other world class courses, but I am still partial to the golf on South Maui. There are a few main reasons for this and incidentally, weather is a big part.

As discussed the high temperature (and lows for the matter) do not fluctuate very much from month to month on Maui, but two weather traits do: wind and rain. Though neither West Maui nor South Maui get a lot of either, South Maui’s weather is more predictable. South Maui does, in fact, receive LESS RAIN than West Maui and the Trade Winds are not as unpredictable as on the West side. Oh, and the views from any of the three golf course in Wailea are amazing – check out the 30 second video below as proof.

Golf on Maui is typically expensive, but we at the South Maui Condos Owner Direct Vacation Rentals have a few tips.

1) Golf South Maui (Maui Nui or Wailea’s Blue, Gold or Emerald) as the sun will shine even if you see clouds on Haleakala (the trades typically keep the clouds up on the Volcano).

2) Play in the afternoon for a discounted rate – but do note, if there are trade winds, they do blow harder in the afternoon.

3) If you LOVE to golf and have the time and stamina to play 36 – then tee off early as most all courses will offer a same day 2nd 18 at over a 50% discount!

4) Finally, our favorite reason. If you are a guest of any of our 200+ condos that are members of our fabulous Maui Owner Condos by Owner Directory, then you will receive discount coupons to play at Maui Nui Golf Club. AND if you stay at any Wailea Resort (such as Ekahi Village) you also receive discounts at the Blue, Gold and Emerald Courses in Wailea.

For any other Maui Golf, Maui Activities or information about any of our Maui Condos do not hesitate to reach out.

Hope to see you on the tee box real soon.

When is the best time to visit Maui

When is the best time to visit Maui

I am often asked, “When is the best time to visit Maui?” The answer is both simple and complicated: it depends. Personally I never think there is a bad time to come to Valley Isle, but the reality is, what are you looking for in particular on your Maui vacation? Answer this question, and then you’ll know exactly when to come to Maui.

When is the best time to visit Maui

Without question the most popular time to visit Maui begins with the Christmas Holiday / Winter Break and lasts through April. This is our high season. Guests come from all over to escape the cold, warm up, snorkel / scuba, golf and in general relax. Not only is our winter warm and beachy, but it is also whale watching season! Maui’s largest visitor, the humpback whale, visit Maui typically from early November until late March. Why do the whales come to Maui at this time? To escape the cold Alaskan winters of course! Truthfully, they come to mate and calve.

If you like having the beach to yourself and fun bartering with the activities then you would want to come during the least busy time to visit Maui. Though summer time has often been a 2nd High Season, the last several years have found early May and June to be slow. But the slowest time on Island is no doubt the weeks between Thanksgiving (the 4th Thursday in November) and the rush of the Winter Holiday season. There are fewer families here due to school schedules and summer obligations. The beaches are emptier, there are few to no lineups for restaurants and you will have the best selection and rates on condos and hotel rooms.

The best time to visit Maui for the weather? Well, if you like low to upper 80s throughout the day and low 60s to upper 60s at night, then anytime is for you. I’ve often joked you cannot tell the difference between January 1st and July 1st weather wise on Maui. Maui’s temperatures are relatively stable throughout the year, the warmest months are August and September with day-time temperatures in the high 80s, the coolest month being January (low 80s during the day and mid 60s at night). It tends to be more humid in the summer months, so you may want to check that the condo has A/C. In sunny south Maui (Kihei/Wailea) we average 8-11 inches of rain/year (very little at all) so generally rain isn’t a factor here. However, the rest of the island does get more rain. Remember, Maui has many micro-climates, if it’s raining where you are, drive 10 minutes in any direction and you will usually find sunshine. The Central Pacific hurricane season (June-November) is usually pretty tame, but always good to be aware.

The least expensive time to visit Maui is generally in June and then again between Thanksgiving and Winter Break when demand is low. Many owners will schedule larger maintenance projects during the summer which can help to limit availability as well; so make sure you check with your host to make sure no construction near you when you visit. You will also find that owners often offer last-minute specials if they have openings; so never bad to ask for a “Last Minute” special. The trick then becomes finding a flight to match available dates. Airlines will often add flights in high season and offer incredibly tempting deals. Do make sure you have a place to stay before booking that cheap flight!

How about the worst time to visit Maui? Are you kidding me!?! Is there a worst time to go on vacation? Make sure you have all your ducks in a row back at home, pack your bags and come on vacation! This is the perfect place to relax and work on your tan! After all, there is a reason Maui No Ka Oi!

What to do on Maui when it rains

What to do on Maui when it rains

With an average annual rainfall total of 8-11 inches, this is pretty true. Kihei/Wailea lay on the desert side of Maui, in Haleakala’s rain shadow. Most of the rain arrives from the North East. However, every now and then a storm will approach from the South or Southwest and that’s when we get some rain.

Rainy Day ideas for your Maui Vacation

It never rains in South Maui!

With an average annual rainfall total of 8-11 inches, this is pretty true. Kihei/Wailea lay on the desert side of Maui, in Haleakala’s rain shadow. Most of the rain arrives from the NorthEast. However, every now and then a storm will approach from the South or Southwest and that’s when we get some rain. Early December has been particularly wet with six days of rainfall in Kihei! It does feel like we must have gotten our year’s supply of rain. Be prepared, here’s your local Maui Forecast.

Unfortunately the weather is beyond your condo owner’s control. However, here is a list of rainy-day ideas we’ve put together for you.

Shopping

Time to find that perfect gift, souvenir or just window-shop. Where? Front Street (Lahaina), Whaler’s Village (Kaanapali), Shops at Wailea (Wailea), Paia, Makawao, the shops at the Triangle by Kalama Park, Market Street in downtown Wailuku.

Take in some Culture

Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. The First Light Film Festival is going on right now at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. How about checking out some art galleries?

Adventures

  • Can’t go snorkeling ? Go see the fish at the Maui Ocean Center . Check their website for dates and times of special presentations. There’s lots to see!
  • Go whale watching  (December-April). Apparently humpback whales are particularly active in the rain. Pick up a rain poncho before you go. You can also check out the Visitor Center at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary in North Kihei.
  • Go exploring
    • The Maui Tropical Plantation has some cute shops, a bar, restaurant and of course tours of their farm.
    • Take a tour at the Maui Brewing Company in Kihei (and sample their products).
    • Go for an upcountry drive: Ocean Vodka,
    • the Surfing Goat Farm,
    • Maui Wine (tastings),
    • Ulupalakua Ranch General Store for lunch (they have the best grassfed burgers), the lavender farm…

Happy Hour

Try out some of our restaurants for happy hour (think early dinner at half price!), find a favorite locally grown/roasted coffee at one of the many coffee shops.

Other Options

  1. Try your skill at Island Art Party in Kihei
  2. For our Canadian guests – binge-watch American Netflix (you know the programming is quite different).
  3. Go for walks in the rain – remember, it may be raining, but it’s still in the 70s or maybe even low 80s.
  4. Go to the gym for a workout, try a yoga class, or go for a swim – if it’s too crazy at your condo’s pool, check out the FREE County-run aquatic center (both Kihei and Lahaina have one).

What NOT to do in the rain

  • Please do not go in the ocean. In fact, stay out of the ocean as long as the water is murky. Even if some surf instruction places are open for business, it does not mean it’s safe to go in the water. The rain can cause localized flooding, washing all sorts of ‘fun stuff’ into the ocean. Bacteria counts go up, you can catch an infection. Also, murky water attracts sharks. A close encounter with Jaws is not a great idea for a rainy day.
  • Do not go hiking. It may not be raining heavily where you are, but it could be further upcountry. Flash flooding can and does happen and you could end up stuck with no escape route or worse.

Maui has many different micro-climates. It is rare for the entire island to have rain at the same time. Go for a drive and see if you can find the sun, or at least something fun to do!

10 Tips to help You safely book a Maui Vacation Rental on-line

10 Tips to help You safely book a Maui Vacation Rental on-line

Are you planning your Maui vacation but a bit unsure about how the vacation rental booking process works? We’ve come up with the following tips to help you safely book your Maui vacation rental on-line as you explore your accommodation options for your dream vacation on Maui.

10 Tips to help You safely book a Maui Vacation Rental on-line

1. In Maui, it is required for owners to have a Hawaii Tax ID on all listing sites as well as in their condo. Ensure that the owner’s listing has this license number. It will look like GE-056-906-5472-01 or TA-056-906-5472-01.

2. Ask for the owner’s phone number. Does it match the one on the listing? Make sure to speak to the person on the phone and ask them about the property. You can compare the description with online photos.

3. Ask for the owner’s LinkedIn profile. It’s hard to fake 100 business contacts. If they are not on LinkedIn, try Facebook or Twitter.

4. Never pay via wire transfer to an off-shore account. Many owners will accept credit cards and checks. Some will do a wire transfer, but if so, make sure you get the SWIFT Code and Routing Number, Account Number, Name on the Account and of course the Bank’s name. You can then have your bank verify the account and make sure the names match.

5. Use the BOOK NOW button on the listing you want to book on MauiOwnerCondos.com It is the safest way to be sure you are dealing with the actual owner. The forms are widgets and much harder to alter than a displayed email address or phone number.

6. Verify ownership with Maui County’s Tax Assessor. We already do this for every listing here on MauiOwnerCondos.com – it is a part of our vetting process. Want to do it yourself: Go to the Maui Tax Assessor’s website and type the owner’s last name. You will see the name match the property address. Not all names match as people hold title in different ways (i.e. trust, use of maiden name or nickname). However, if you are making a payment via check, in most cases your check should be mailed to the address on this tax website.

7. Scammers do not go through the trouble of getting a unique website or Facebook page for their vacation rentals. If you see that a vacation rental has a website, Facebook page and phone number chances are that you’re working with the owner.

8. Make sure you are given the name and contact information of the on-island contact. All vacation rentals in Hawaii require an on-island contact. If the owner lives on Oahu, but their rental is on Maui, they need an on-island contact.

9. Check for reviews for the condo. If the website / listing doesn’t have any ask the owner.

10. The best rule of thumb, if the deal seems too good to be true, it very well may be a fake.

We hope these tips help as you prepare to make an amazing vacation decision – booking a vacation rental on Maui!

Where to Buy Great Art on Maui

Where to Buy Great Art on Maui

I love art but most of my Maui art ends up decorating my vacation rental condos. I get a lot of questions from my guests about where I bought a particular piece, or if they could find the artist, etc. So I thought I’d put together a quick list of my “go to” places to find great art on Maui.

Where to Buy Great Art on Maui

When you travel do you buy souvenirs for yourself? A friend who has traveled extensively buys a small painting every place she’s traveled. Her walls are filled with wonderful art and neat travel memories. I love that idea! What a great way to remind yourself of all the trips you’ve taken.

Not sure you want to invest in an original painting? How about jewelry, ceramics or a handmade purse? You may be surprised what artists are doing with their art these days! How about a shower curtain print, a cell phone cover or a decorative pillow? Of course you could go with the traditional prints, giclees, cards or calendars too.

There are a lot of great artists here on Maui and if you look in the right places, you can meet them and perhaps even take a picture of them with your new treasure!

Here are my favorite places to shop and meet a local artist while looking for great art on Maui.

The Lahaina Arts Society is a group of Maui artists who collectively sell their art at Lahaina Cannery Mall. Pre fire  they were  in the old Lahaina Courthouse and its former jail (oceanside of the Banyan tree), The gallery is staffed by member volunteers, a portion of sales goes toward art education on Maui. They also hosted several craft fairs a month under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Here you meet artists and see a much greater variety of art and crafts than what is on display in a gallery. Grab a coffee or shave-ice and go on a treasure hunt! I met Beth Cooper under the Banyan Tree and bought this great oil painting last month

• The Maui Open Studios if you are on Maui during the month of February, do not miss this free self-guided tour of artists’ studios and galleries. February begins with a preview on Saturday, February 6th hosted at the Maui Culinary Academy in Kahului. On each of the following three weekends artists host open houses around Maui. Meet these local artists, check out their studios, watch them create their art, and shop with all proceeds going directly to the artist! Weekend 1 (Feb 14/15) is Upcountry, Weekend 2 (Feb 21/22) is North Shore, Central and Hana, and Weekend 3 (Feb 28, Mar 1) is South Maui. View the artists’ information online and plan your route!

The Maui Hands Art Gallery has three locations in Makawao, Pa'ia and Wailea at the Shops at Waileat. These galleries are privately owned and represent over 300 artists, all based in Hawai’i, the majority from Maui. Every month they showcase different local artists who will then spend some time at the gallery, creating and talking with customers. Last year I bought a beautiful color infused aluminum etching hand signed by Richard Digiacomo at the Makawao Maui Hands gallery.

• The Maui Swap Meet takes place every Saturday morning from 7am-1pm at the University of Hawaii campus in Kahului. Admission price is minimal at $2/person, parking is free. Bring a bag, you never know what you will find at the swap meet! Come early for the best selection. There is no “specific” web info for the swap meet, so I always find the best results is to do a google search.

Of course there are many individual galleries all around the island. Many of the local shops along South Kihei road and of course a few pricy ones on Front Street in Lahaina (I bought a great Peter Lik picture here years ago) and also at the Shops at Wailea or Whalers Village in Ka'anapali. Any other fun stroll too is through many of the larger hotel’ foyers as well.

As always, we welcome comments about our posts and always welcome ideas for new topics.

Last Day on Maui, what to do?

Last Day on Maui, what to do?

It’s your last day on Maui, what to do? Luckily, there are still some great ideas and options while you are on the Valley Isle. About 1/3 of guests leave Maui on a late-night flight. With a 10 or 11am check-out, this means that you spend your final day on Maui homeless which is a bit of a downer.

In an ideal world, you will be able to pay for a late check-out. Wait – pay? Yes, after all a late check-out means the condo cannot be cleaned and re-rented that day. However most owners will offer a late check-out for a 1/2 nights fee or another amount. These are great because then you don’t need to worry about where to store your luggage. You can still go to the beach, the pool, nap, shower and then head to the airport feeling refreshed and ready for the long flight home.

Usually guests don’t think about their last day or how they will spend it until their vacation is almost over. Last minute calls to the owner or property manager are often futile as cleaners and maintenance people have already been scheduled. Also, there may be another guest arriving that afternoon. Thus it is best to ask about a late check out when you make your reservation.

If you can’t secure late checkout, what can you do?

1. Check with the airline – when is the earliest you can check your luggage? Consider dropping the luggage off early so you don’t have to worry about leaving it in your car. Most airlines allow you to drop luggage 4 hours before departure.

2. Pack your luggage in your trunk, and then don’t open the trunk until you are headed to the airport. Just remember to practice “out of sight, out of mind.” Don’t give someone an easy chance / opportunity to grab something of yours. Always take your IDs, electronics, valuables etc. with you.

3. I have heard rumors of people renting a storage locker for the day – I’m not entirely sure how workable that is. I’ve also heard of people renting a cheaper hotel room for the day – however, with an afternoon check-in, you may be able to have the front desk to hold your luggage for you. It is arguable whether the luggage would be safer in the car or a hotel back-room.

Ideas on how to spend your final day on Maui

1. Maui Ocean Center (bonus, it’s air-conditioned) and has a restaurant attached.

2. Maui Tropical Plantation.

3. Go for an upcountry drive. Ocean Vodka Distillery, Surfing Goat Dairy, Haleakala Distillery, Makawao Town, Ulupalakua Ranch, Lavender Farm etc. etc.

4. Bring a towel from home or buy a cheap towel or two to share and spend your last afternoon at the condo pool. Most have bathrooms for guests, so you can change and get ready for the airport.

What not to do on your final day on Maui

1. Scuba diving – generally not a good idea to subject your body to extreme changes in altitude.

2. Road to Hana – in general, avoid drives where you may be stuck in heavy traffic and miss your flight. Watch with driving to Lahaina too, leave plenty of extra time for the drive to the airport.

What is the best Maui fruit?

What is the best Maui fruit?

One thing I love to do when I travel is to “eat like a local.” I want to try the foods, and try to be as local as I can. The same can be done on Maui of course! Because of our awesome climate, fruit is one of my favorite eats on Maui. What is local? What is good?

What is the best Maui fruit?

The best fruit on Maui is widely considered to be the Maui Gold pineapple,

Celebrated for its exceptional sweetness and flavor that surpass many other pineapples worldwide, Maui Gold pineapples are renowned for their golden yellow skin and exceptionally sweet and juicy flesh. They are available year-round and stand out from typical pineapples due to their consistently high quality and sweetness. Maui Gold is often highlighted as a premier fruit on the island, enjoyed fresh or in various local delicacies.

Alongside this, Maui is known for a vibrant array of tropical fruits including papayas, mangoes, and apple bananas, each offering unique tastes emblematic of the island’s fertile soil and ideal growing climate.

Top Five “Other” Fruits on Maui

    • Yee’s Mangos in Kihei:  Okay, so these are even more than those golden apples at Safeway – I believe last time I asked, they were around $3/lb, maybe more. But, I promise you, these mangos are better than any you will find in a grocery store. I call them my breakfast candy! Yee’s orchard is in Central Kihei along South Kihei Road – next to Long’s Plaza, across the street from the Arts & Crafts Fair (by McDonalds). It’s ‘just a shack’ and sometimes you will see a peacock strolling along. (1165 S. Kihei Road, Kihei, HI, United States, 96753)
    • Apple Bananas :  Find these at any farmer’s market. Apple bananas are about half the size of regular bananas. They are firmer, and even if the peel turns color, they are usually still firm. They have a bit of a tangy after taste (reminiscent a little of apple). Try them! There are different varieties so ask for assistance. Some are better for eating, others for cooking.
    • Lilikoi: Also known as passion fruit. These are a strange leathery fruit that grow on a vine. The color (when ripe) can be yellow, pink or purple. If they look perfect, they are still sour. If they are starting to shrivel or look a little worse for wear, they are sweeter (though still tart). You cut them in half and scoop out the seeds and juice with a spoon. Yes, the seeds are edible.
    • Papaya : Truth be told, I am not that big a fan – these are an acquired taste. However, if you can find a strawberry papaya, buy it! It can be hard to tell by the outside, but the flesh is more of an orange-red color and they are sweeter than the usual kind you can buy. They will be smaller. How to eat them – first cut off the end (by the stem), then slice lengthwise and scoop out all the papaya seeds. Please do not run the seeds through the garburator – it will plug it up.

Local hint, perk up your papaya by scooping lilikoi seeds/juice into the papaya’s cavity, it gives the papaya extra zest. You can also squeeze some lime juice over the papaya. Another friend sprinkles cinnamon over her papaya and fills it with blueberries.

    • POG :  Not available at the farmer’s market, instead you can find it at the grocery store, Longs or Costco. POG stands for Passion Orange Guava juice, usually made from concentrate. It was originally created by the old Haleakala Dairy on Maui (no longer in existence) and is now produced by Meadow Gold Dairy. Drink it straight, or mix it with vodka or rum. A favorite of mine is to make mimosas with POG and champagne!

    Where to Buy

Maui’s farmers markets and farm stands are the best places to find the freshest and highest quality fruit on Maui. Notable places include the Maui Tropical Plantation, Upcountry Farmers Market, and fruit stands like Yee’s Orchard in Kihei. These venues often offer fruit picked at peak ripeness with more authentic flavors than supermarket imports

In sum, while there are many delicious fruits native and cultivated on Maui, the Maui Gold pineapple remains the flagship fruit prized for its sweetness and quality, making it the best fruit on Maui in many local and visitor opinions.

West Maui ReOpens after Lahaina Fire

West Maui ReOpens after Lahaina Fire

The Lahaina Fire - West Maui: Who can go where & when, Ways to help with recovery, What's Ahead.

West Maui ReOpens after Lahaina Fire

    Phases 2 & 3 in West Maui to ReOpen - Nov 1, 2023!

Monday, Oct 23, Mayor Richard Bissen announced the reopening of West Maui Phases 2 & 3 in the aftermath of the devastating Lāhainā Fire. The area from Kahana to Ka'anapali (Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa area) now joins Phase 1 (Kapalua thru Kahana) after their successful reopening Oct 8, 2023.

The phases were developed to provide for residents to return to work, establish needed childcare, settle children into the temporary state Department of Education elementary and intermediate schools and Lahainaluna High School, and provide for a more deliberate process to help with housing needs for the thousands in temporary shelter at many hotel properties.

The Mayor noted: "The Red Cross has assured me that housing for displaced Lāhainā residents, including those staying in hotels, is not in jeopardy. In addition, the County has a commitment from other partners to work on developing child care programs for displaced families. Sheltering close to 7,000 survivors remains a critical focus of our efforts and their needs are our priority. I appreciate the help our hotels have provided these past several weeks, and we’ll continue to work together with the hotel properties and American Red Cross."
For the most part residents welcome the return of sensitive tourism as it offers a way for many to get back to work and offers a sense of normalcy in at least one area of their lives. The sidebar on this post offers links to resources that can be used to find volunteer opportunities for those wishing to show their support by donating their time to help distribute resources, prepare living quarters, care for displaced animals and many more. When traveling, please remember to be considerate.

West Maui Set to ReOpen - Oct 8, 2023!

Governor Josh Green, MD, announced Thursday 9/7/23, that West Maui, excluding the immediate Fire areas in Lahaina Town, reopens Oct 8, 2023. 2 months after the devastating Lahaina fire destroyed the historical town and took the lives of at least 115, the healing process has begun.

The beauty of this part of the West Side has not been impacted. Your experience here will be different from the past in that Lahaina Town and it's harbor are off limits. Sooo many people were impacted as they not only lost friends and loved ones but saw their jobs and businesses go up in flames. Yet the community is strong and has banded together in so many ways to help those in need & create housing and jobs and LOVE as West Maui reopens.

Maui and it's amazing Ohana (extended family) invites you back to enjoy the peace and beauty that is Maui and be a part of its regrowth and recovery. Staying in West Maui you will likely interact with many who have been impacted as they transition from temporary short term to longer term temporary housing. Be gentle and respectful. Just by being there you support these folk. For those who want to do more there are many options for volunteers.

SEVENTH PROCLAMATION RELATING TO WILDFIRES (Mayorʻs link no longer active)

Where can I go when I come to Maui?

All of Maui except Lahaina Town! Here is what a guest in one of the Wailea Ekahi condos sent us in late August:

"We come often to Maui, and admittedly, were a bit hesitant to come at this time. ... It is as it always is, an incredibly beautiful paradise that soothes the soul. .... Restaurants are open with full menus, and dare I say full bars! Traffic is much lighter, planes are more empty and the beaches are serene. It is as it must have been decades ago, and the experience is wonderful. We are so glad we came. Our visit here, incredible as it is, is made so much more wonderful by knowing we are supporting the people of Maui.

What can I do on Maui ?

In addition to the options below restaurants, shops, tours and activities and places to stay all over the island, including the West Side are available.

    • Beaches Galore - Wailea, Makena & Kihei: Sugar Beach in Kihei near Maalaea is great for surfing, the Kamaole I, II, & III beaches in Kihei are great for swimming & snorkeling. Keawakapu, Wailea and many more down the South Shore to Makena's Big Beach & Baby Beach are just a few
    • Maui Ocean Center in Ma'alaea Harbor: Wonderful Aquarium for all ages - Mini Golf, Rock climbing in this area too
    • Ma'alaea Boat Tours: Ferry to Lanai, snorkeling trips to Molokini, and more
    • Haleakala National Park: Hiking trails, amazing sunsets and sunrises, moonscapes and rain forests
    • Iao Valley State Park Lush and green - waterfalls, museums, amazing view
    • Road to Hana: You have all heard of this iconic drive. Start in Paia - Shops & restaurants on Baldwin Ave remind you of Lahaina. Stop at the best waterfalls, road side stands, beaches etc. With fewer visitors, this is a wonderful time to enjoy this drive. Registration and fees for access to parking and the Black Sand beach are now required. Use the Wai'anapanapa reservation system (no same day access is allowed so make reservations at least the night before). Lots to do here - including a hike and unique geologic formations like a lava cave, blowhole and sea arch.
    • UpCountry:
      • Lavender Farm (open Friday through Monday from 10 am to 4 pm),
      • Surfing Goat Dairy (open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.)
      • Golf at Pukalani.
      • Kula: Amazing nursery's & protea farms (18 structures were lost to fires here too so be respectful)
        • Maui Wine (museum, tastings, open Tues-Sunday 11am-5 PM)
        • Ocean Vodka, and
        • Makawao for more art, a bakery and great food. - There is a Polo field here to as it's Cowboy country but matches tend to be in May. Also winery, vodka
    • Golf: The Isthmus has the DUNES of MAUI LANI (links style course); Upcountry = PUKALANI; Kihei = Maui Nui (has an amazing driving range): Wailea Gold, Emerald & Old Blue
    • Kihei: Maui Brewing Co, Kihei Boat ramp - tours to lava coves, Molokini & more
    • Farmers markets, Swap Meet

The Lahaina Fire - West Maui: Who can go where & when, Ways to help with recovery, What's Ahead.

Lahaina Fire & West Maui Updates

When is it Appropriate to Travel to Maui?

Now - Except for the immediate Fire areas in Lahaina (about 15% of Maui's land area) & 18 structures in Kula, the rest of Maui is wanting you to come. Maui is not large and tourism is vital to our economic health. Your presence provides jobs for who are now sheltering friends and family and helps all of Maui in their recovery process. Be gentle.

Where can I go when I come to Maui?

Come to South Maui! Here is what a current guest in one of the Wailea Ekahi condos just sent us:

"We come often to Maui, and admittedly, were a bit hesitant to come at this time. Here in Wailea, you would never know that the fires existed. It is as it always is, an incredibly beautiful paradise that soothes the soul. There is no smoke, no ash, no supply problems.

Governor Josh Green, MD, the Mayor of Maui, Richard Bissen and the Hawaii Tourism Association (HTA) have all put out the message that while Maui is open and welcomes volunteers and encourages visitors to South, East & North Maui, West Maui is closed to all but residents & essential personnel. The Governor's emergency proclamation REQUESTS "only essential travel to West Maui until October 17. The disaster emergency relief period shall commence immediately (Aug 19) and continue through October 17, 2023, unless terminated or superseded by separate proclamation, whichever shall occur first.".

SIXTH PROCLAMATION RELATING TO WILDFIRES, August 19, 2023

Will this info change? Quite likely. The hotels and condos along the coast north of Lahaina were not damaged by the fire, but were impacted with loss oof utilities & communication. West Maui is already getting power and Internet back, stores & restaurants are beginning to reopen and a fence to help keep the ash from the fire contained has been erected around the borders of the fire area in Lahaina. The road to West Maui is open without check points to all except at night when it is only open to residents and essential personnel.

Visitors, no matter how respectful they try to be, will be competing for resources (including vital communications like Internet, phone, medication, basic supplies & food.) with displaced residents. Time is needed to see how things settle. We suggest you wait til October if you want to stay on the West Side.

To reach the resorts in West Maui you have to drive by Lahaina. Most hotels (condo hotels too) have taken in refugees while others have found temporary housing with family and friends or long term rentals in other parts of the island. Many residents will be able to return to homes that are not damaged but in the evacuation areas. BUT - Maui has long had a shortage of affordable housing and the Lahaina Fire did not help. Governor Green expects 2000 condo units will need to be at least temporarily converted to long term rentals, most on the West side, to house those displaced

What can I do on Maui - not on the West Side?

    • Beaches Galore - Wailea, Makena & Kihei:  Sugar Beach in Kihei near Maalaea is great for surfing, the Kamaole I, II, & III beaches in Kihei are great for swimming & snorkeling. Keawakapu, Wailea and many more down the South Shore to Makena's Big Beach & Baby Beach are just a few

    • Road to Hana: You have all heard of this iconic drive. Start in Paia - Shops & restaurants on Baldwin Ave remind you of Lahaina Consider a tour (small group or family) to help with congestion and stops at the best waterfalls, road side stands, beaches etc

    • UpCountry:

Maui Pre Travel Test Avoids Quarantine

Maui Pre Travel Test Avoids Quarantine

Welcome Home to MAUI!!  Finally - Beginning Oct 15 our pre-travel testing program allows you to come to Maui without quarantine.gg

Maui Pre Travel Test Avoids Quarantine

Pre Travel Testing comes to Maui Oct 15

Our new Pre-travel testing program enables travelers to avoid a mandatory 14-day quarantine if they are tested no earlier than 72 hours before their flight arrives with an FDA-approved nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), performed using a nasal swab, and can show proof of negative test results from a CLIA certified laboratory. Tests will NOT be available at Hawaii airports. Tests are the responsibility of the traveler.

Here is a printable program flow chart (no longer available at governor.hawaii.gov - but is displayed above)

Travelers also will have their temperatures checked upon arrival and must fill out a travel and health form via the new NEW SAFE TRAVELS Website (no longer available at travel.hawaii.gov) & App. Upon arrival in Hawai‘i, passengers unable to provide proof of an approved negative test will be required to go into quarantine for 14 days or until they can provide proof of negative test results.

In a Press Release, Governor Ige announced his new Leadership Team overseeing the state's public health response to COVID-19. "Lt. Gov. Josh Green will spearhead the pre-travel testing program, which includes adding partners to administer the tests and sourcing new testing options and is also responsible for planning the state’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy".

If your pre travel test results are not available prior to arriving in Hawaii, passengers will remain in quarantine until they get their test result back. The test will cost between$120 to $140 and varies in different parts of the country. Travelers will be responsible for the cost of their test. Lt Governor Green hints a different test costing $20-$40 may also be in the pipe line soon. “The technology of testing is rapidly evolving,” Green said. “So as cheaper, quicker tests become available … we’ll work with DOH, DOT, airports, health care, people everywhere to use those tests also. So this will continuously improve and get easier and easier.”

Focus on Guests Safety in our Maui Homes.

Keeping our team and guests safe is a primary concern for us all at Maui Owner Condos. These are our homes too. We are all paying attention to CDC and Hospitality guidelines and have ramped up cleaning & disinfecting procedures in our homes. Many of us have added UVC and I-wave functionality enabling us to insure virus free environments for guests and staff. For more info see or blog post:  Cleaning & Guest Support Guidance

COVID-19 Cleaning and Guest Support Guidance

Welcome Home to MAUI!!  A very Safe place to be. Hawaii already has a very low instance of virus, but now we want you to know the extra steps we have taken to insure your Maui home is a safe haven. Read our enhanced cleaning statement, Covid-19 cleaning guidance & guest support during COVID-19 for our MOC Ohana. We encourage Guests & Staff to show their Aloha and follow safe practices to help us maintain this safe record.

COVID-19 Cleaning and Guest Support Guidance

Welcome "home" to MAUI!! A very Safe place to be.

In Hawaii we are fortunate to have had an extremely low COVID-19 experience in our population. The testing and quarantine measures in place for travelers and our low incidence of the virus make the likelihood of contracting COVID-19 while here much lower than most other places and make Hawaii a very safe place to be. We encourage Guests & Staff to show their Aloha and follow safe practices to help us maintain this record.

We want you to know the extra steps we have taken in our covid-19 cleaning process to insure your Maui home is a safe haven. During the course of the pandemic, each of our units will have info on safety measures for our guests. The enhanced cleaning procedures suggested below are guidelines we have presented to our member owners to aid them & their staff in decision making. Each owner operates their own business. We do not dictate but do keep them informed. Keeping our team and guests safe is a primary concern for us all.

We are proactive owners of private apartments, condos & villas that many of us occupy ourselves part of the year. Mālama (to care for or to serve in the Hawaiian Language) is a deep seeded value we all extend to our guests. We are not large hotels with many visitors passing through. We have always had a high standard for cleaning our homes. With the onset of COVID-19 and following the advice of the Hawaii Department of Health, CDC, WHO and EPA we have enhanced a few of our cleaning process to insure a safe environment for our staff and visitors. Our processes will continue to be reassessed using the most current guidelines and information on how the virus spreads.

Many of you have chosen a Short Term (Transient) Vacation Rental over a Hotel because of the extra space, home like feel, kitchen facilities and added privacy. In addition we have a lower environmental footprint than hotels, use less resources, water, & electricity. We don’t demand the volume of guests that large hotels require and the money spent stays local. You help support our local economy. Mahalo for your choice.

You can expect the deep and regular cleaning of our condos to exceed CDC guidelines, including basic cleaning using EPA-approved disinfectant and for some, electrostatic spraying, UVC light or iWave technology as an additional layer of protection. In many of our homes when a/c is run, we keep the air clean by providing air filtration, which removes 99.9% of in-air particles including viruses, and refreshes the condo air every 30 minutes or less. Ask your owner.

It is clear most of us will no longer be accepting back to back stays and without extra air cleaning methods we will need to provide at least 24 hours between stays. We all must adjust our expectations for how long a job will take and what it will cost and accept it will cost more. The use of UVC lights or iWave technology in a room, Central AC or SPLIT system or electrostatic disinfectant sprayers can help reduce the time to safely allow access for a cleaner after a stay and to clean and disinfect our condos. As time goes on and the CDC’s guidelines change and tracking and testing show we are not as in danger of spread, we will amend these suggestions or apply them only to units where a guest has shown positive for COVID-19 at some time during their stay.

For those of you being informed your stay at one of our condos will need to be shortened in order to prepare your condo properly and who do not wish to spend one day less in paradise, check with your owner - we have made arrangements for discounted one night stays a several hotels on island. Pack your swim & sleep gear on top, take a deep breath and relax - save the shopping and organizing for day 2.

This guide for "Enhanced Covid-19 Cleaning" is based on updated resources from the CDC, WHO & the EPA and a review of cleaning checklists from leading vacation rental & hospitality sources. We will continually monitor CDC recommendations and update our policies and procedures as recommended.

    Enhanced COVID-19 Cleaning Guidance

    • Cleaners should
      • do a temperature check prior to entering a condo to clean and should not report to work if they have any symptoms COVID 19
        • CDC Self Checker. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html
      • Wash/sanitize hands prior to entering a condo and again when exiting. Best recommended hand washing uses soap & water
      • Wear a mask & gloves when entering a unit, moving, pillows, removing linens, towels from bed, bath etc
    • Longer cleaning times are expected with appropriate increase in pay.
    • FIRST STEP: Thorough cleaning including molding, ceiling fans and drapes, with CDC approved household cleaners & disinfectants that are appropriate for the surface
      • Remove all magazines, tour guides, etc left by departing guest.
      • Wash hands or replace gloves after cleaning each room to prevent cross contamination if present.
      • On porous surfaces use a vacuum with HEPA filter to remove visible contamination if present and, if needed, clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces prior to spraying with disinfectant
      • Do not sweep floors with a broom; instead use a vacuum cleaner (with Hepa filter)
      • Bedding & towels should not be shaken but bagged for cleaning off site or immediately laundered as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely.
      • After each guest stay, properly clean all appliances and kitchen areas, including refrigerator shelving, the oven stovetop, coffee-makers, toasters, etc.
      • Clean/disinfect cleaning tools a guest might use.
    •  DISINFECT/SANITIZE: After cleaning, disinfect all surfaces with appropriate EPA-registered disinfectants . Use of an electrostatic sprayer using Hypochlorous Acid is recommended as it is safe for asthmatics and can be safely sprayed on surfaces where food is handled without requiring rinsing.
      • Use extra sanitization on frequently touched areas (thermostats, key pads, door knobs, appliance handles/knobs, phones, sink and toilet handles, railings, keypads, hangers, etc) as recommended by the CDC guidelines on cleaning and disinfecting
    • Service requests should be considered with regard for the safety of maintenance providers and guests. To limit exposure, defer nonessential maintenance while the rental unit is occupied and handle only emergency or urgent issues as allowed by applicable law where possible.
    • Ensure that any HVAC/air filters have been replaced per the manufacturer’s directions. Consider whether more regular replacement of the filters is necessary. Use high filtration efficiency filters. Do not touch the surface of used air filters and remove and dispose of them with minimal disturbance using disposable gloves.
    • Coronaviruses naturally die in hours to days in typical indoor and outdoor environments. Viruses are killed more quickly by warmer temperatures and sunlight.
      • If an area has not been occupied for 7 days - REGULAR CLEANING is all that is needed
      • If an area is outside: Maintain regular cleaning standards

Please note, during the course of the pandemic; for protection of our guests and to comply with CDC guidelines requiring us to wash all linens, pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc whether used or not after each stay, the unit may no longer be provided with the extra linens and kitchen supplies many have come to expect in our condos. Same with magazines, books & tour pamphlets. We apologize and hope for your understanding during this limited time. Lists of food & equipment delivery services, activities that can be done in smaller groups and one time use items are provided. For your convenience, some of us have added disposable gloves, a few masks, & portable hand sanitizer to your welcome basket.

Time on Maui During a Self-Quarantine

Time on Maui During a Self-Quarantine

Think of Maui as a great location for a longer stay - especially now since so many can work & school from home. This post describes how our Ohana preparing for the ending of non-essential travel restrictions but anticipating some mandatory quarantine orders.

Time on Maui During a Self-Quarantine

We all long to welcome our guests back to Maui

But for now, Governor Ige and Mayor Victorino have asked us all to wait a while before returning. When non-essential travel is again allowed, don't rule out Beautiful Hawaii - even if a quarantine is still mandated. If you have the time, you can relax, get a lot of work or family time done in a gorgeous setting and plan your own vacation when you can again roam.

Update June 2, 2020: Hawaii is now in ACT with CARE which means non-essential travel is allowed and accommodations are allowed to open but quarantines are still in place into at least July. Currently Maui approves ONLY HOTELS for stays by those being required to quarantine.

Update Sept 16, 2020: Beginning October 15, 2020 all travelers from in or out of state can skip quarantine if they get a valid COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their trip, and show proof of a negative test result at the airport

At this time, the Governor is giving us in the Vacation Rental industry an opportunity to test our new cleaning methods, standards & updated condo amenities, designed to insure the health and safety of our staff and guests, and the island by hosting those Kama'aina and others not subject to quarantine. Fines are heavy and enforced. Each county can add restrictions but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We expect more guidance from Maui County soon.

Maui is perfect for a longer stay

Hawaii is actually a very safe place to be and even with a 14-day quarantine can offer a peaceful setting to work and relax in while waiting to emerge from Quarantine. Our owners have always had rigorous cleaning standards and now we are helping them with info from professionals on how to ensure staff, visitors and our homes will remain safe.

We all have WIFI and fast internet. Many of us have printers and even filing cabinets, staplers, desks or tables on the lanai. Work in sunshine or shade. Listen to the waves crash on the beach, wind in the palms or birds singing nearby while you work. Take time off look around you and enjoy. Bring the family and take a larger space - the kids can do school work, play old fashioned family games together, read books so you can id the fish and flowers when your 14 days is over.

Many owners are offering tools from exercise equipment, restaurants providing food delivery, videos and online education to resources for private tours, hikes, photography, painting, and much more. Plan the island trips and activities you want to do when quarantine ends, during the early days. Learn to make your own lei and dance hula.

Top 5 best Poke on Maui

Are you a poke lover? Or are you not quite sure why I am talking about poking?

Poke (poke-ay) means “to slice or cut crosswise into pieces”. It consists of small chunks of raw marinated fish, very popular here in Hawaii. It typically is served as part of a ‘poke bowl’, sticky rice on the bottom with a few different types of marinated poke and seaweed salad on top.

What kind of fish? Most often it’s made with sashimi grade ahi (tuna), however you can also find shrimp, tako (octopus) or even non-fish varieties. Without a doubt, but favorite is the ahi poke.

I have heard poke is gaining in popularity along the West Coast, maybe you can get it where you live on the Mainland. Generally you either love it or hate it – kind of like with sushi and sashimi. Yes, many restaurants serve poke, but in case you are wondering…

Where do the locals get their poke on Maui?

All the locals I have asked say: Foodland. Seriously? Yes, while all the grocery stores (including Costco) have a poke bar (it’s just that wonderful), Foodland’s poke bar is the best. With 20+ varieties to choose from, don’t be shy to ask for a sample, you can get it with rice, or ask for a few small sample size containers to try different varieties. The price averages at $12/lb. In case you’re wondering, ‘shoyu’ is a local-style soy sauce.

Eskimo Candy is another local favorite, located in Kihei’s industrial part of town (across from Napa Auto Parts and Lokelani Intermediate School). They usually have four different types of poke. A poke bowl is around $13 and is quite filling. This is a small take-out place with limited indoor and outdoor seating, so get it to go. (closed in 2020)

Tamura’s Fine Wine and Liquor. What, what? Why would you buy your poke at a liquor specialty store? Not sure, but this is a chain store from Oahu with three locations on Maui: Tamura’s on Dairy Road in Kahului, a new store in Kihei on Lipoa (close to Fabiani’s) and one in Lahaina on Kupuohi Street.

Another favorite is the ‘Like Poke?’ food truck. There is a gravel parking lot with various food trucks across from the main Costco parking lot entrance. Just in case you don’t want your $1.50 Costco hotdog. Who knew, right?

Takamiya Market in Wailuku. This is the only one I have not been to myself. Though when talking to others about poke, this always comes out during the conversation. Takamiya is a ‘very local style place’, you will not find many tourists. One of their specialties is that they make poke to order.

As always when eating raw fish, it is best to eat it right away and not to let it sit (especially in a hot car). You definitely don’t want to get sick on vacation.

    Purchasing a Maui Vacation Rental?

    Purchasing a Maui Vacation Rental?

With experience in the Maui, Hawaii vacation rental condo business since 1999 we have much to share on how to choose the right condo to insure success in this competitive field.... It's not easy.

    Purchasing a Maui Vacation Rental?

My husband and I first stepped into the Maui, Hawaii vacation rental condo business in 1999 when we wanted help carrying the cost of our new condo at Wailea Ekahi Village and then again the next year when we bought a second condo at Maui Kamaole (which is the Kihei property that seems to me to give the feel of higher end Wailea).

We thought we might re-coop all but about $500 per month of our costs by renting on our own and were surprised that we actually made a profit ($1000 per month) on each condo in the first year of operation. This did not include our remodel costs but we did earn enough to pay for them within a few years. This would not have been true had we chosen a full management company option as they take from 20-50% of your income and many have hidden costs as well. We currently own 2 properties in Wailea Ekahi Village on Maui, Hawaii and rent three others for friends… our model is very successful.

Luckily I wanted to play an active role in our rentals and we entered this market as search engines were beginning to be used to find vacation rental condos. I was knowledgeable in several web creation languages (HTML, CSS, PHP) and worked in SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION so I created our websites and became pretty good at using photoshop and taking photos.

With this knowledge we believed we could successfully advertise our condo inexpensively on-line but since we planned on using the condo as our home away from home, a well-maintained property and thus housekeeping and repair staff were a must. A remodel was also badly needed.

We have learned a lot in the past 12 years and are looking forward to passing on this hard won knowledge to you. Among other things, the articles authored by me on this blog will talk about how to identify a condo property that will rent easily and create a positive cash flow, how to find an on site manager and/or housekeeping service, picking the right contractor for your remodel, decorating for comfort, style and rentals, filing taxes and getting the proper licenses, where to spend your advertising dollar and more.

Wailea Restaurant Review: Manoli’s Pizza Company

After a few months of renovations and menu planning, Manoli’s Pizza Company has opened in Wailea, just above the Shops of Wailea. Manoli’s has big shoes to fill as they take over the location left by Matteo’s after they closed down in the Spring of 2012 to focus on family.

Wailea Restaurant Review: Manoli’s Pizza Company

Don’t let the Greek name fool you, thin crust pizza is the house specialty at Manoli’s. In fact, other than a salad – that is all you will find at Manoli’s. This has been a little mis-leading for some recent guests I’ve spoken to about their first experience. Friends of ours went expecting to enjoy a pasta dish (something Matteo’s was very good at) and were disappointed they could only have pizza. (Edit – pasta, burgers, and a great happy hour are now on the menu (2020)

The food here has been given mixed reviews and could very well be chalked up to their beginning, however since Aaron Placourakis, the owner of Manoli’s, has connections to Nick’s Fish Market you would expect the food to be on par from the beginning. Prices are typical to Maui; a small cheese pizza (12″) starts at $14 and their large (16″) Meat Pizza is $26. The two salads they offer are $8 and $9 respectively and seem a little lacking in size for these prices. On the flip side, their $8.00 Cosmos are tasty and certainly a “value” compared to other locations in Wailea.

One aspect that has not changed from the days of Matteo’s is the view. You can still look out toward Molokini and the Pacific Ocean to remind you that you are on Maui (or perhaps Crete as the namesake was born there). A big change from Matteo’s is the sitting policy, unlike the previous establishment at Manoli’s you are greeted by a server and taken to your specific table where you order and enjoy your meal. Manoli’s is open daily from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM. As always, we welcome comments about our posts and always welcome ideas for new topics.
