Discover Art on Maui
Art on Maui comes in all places, shapes & sizes
Maui isn't just the beach and resort scene. You can find lots of great art on Maui, and often it is right where you are. Only on Maui can you watch a glass artist etching glass in an Orchid green house near Haiku.
The art & music scene encompasses all of Maui but you'll find the most studios up country. There are a lot of great artists here and if you look in the right places, you can meet them and perhaps even take a picture of them with your new treasure!
The Lahaina Arts Society is a group of Maui artists who collectively sell their art in two galleries in the old Lahaina Courthouse and its former jail (oceanside of the Banyan tree). The galleries are staffed by member volunteers, a portion of sales goes toward art education on Maui. They also host several craft fairs a month under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Here you meet artists and see a much greater variety of art and crafts than what is on display in a gallery. Grab a coffee or shave-ice and go on a treasure hunt! Matt met Beth Cooper under the Banyan Tree and bought this great oil painting!
Bonnie found a great stone etching of a couple of Honu (turtles) in Lahaina and persuaded the artist to paint a tri pic, with gallery wrap to display in her Maui home. It now resides in the living room at Wailea Ekahi 20A.
For art classes and activities for children as well as adults head up country to Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center a nonprofit community based visual arts education organization.
One of Bonnie's favorite activities is the February (or more recently, JULY) open houses held through out the island by The Maui Open Studios, a group of over 100 artists. Meet these local artists, check out their studios, watch them create their art, and shop with all proceeds going directly to the artist!
