Discover Golf on Maui
The Ultimate Golfers Getaway
When it comes to finding the perfect destination for a leisurely round of golf, who can surpass the beauty of Maui. With beautiful year-round weather and remarkable views at every turn, it's no wonder why so many visitors seek out the Island of Maui for their ultimate golf getaway.
The island's topography provides the perfect canvas for exceptionally unique golf courses that will challenge a variety of skill levels. In fact, the Island of Maui offers some of the world's best golf courses in the world, including a few that host major tournament events including the PGA TOUR. You won't believe it when a putt breaks up hill!
Golf on Maui can be expensive for the tourist even with special rates. Greens fees can be very high but they generally include a golf cart so maybe $120-$250 for 18 holes isn't awful. There are specials all over especially in the afternoon and for multiple rounds. Some of the best on the South Shore are found at Maui Nui in Kihei and The Old Blue course in Wailea.
Maui Golf Tips & Links to Island Golf Courses
If you're playing in Wailea or Makena afternoons offer the best rates and usually a bit of cloud cover. We are protected here from the full force of the afternoon trade winds so PM golf is possible don't try it in other Maui locations.
South Shore Golf
Guests in all our WAILEA condos receive RESORT RATES at the 3 Wailea Courses and even some better morning rates for those staying in ANY MAUI resort.
Wailea Gold Course is the former site of the Champions & LPGA Skins Games. It boasts sweeping mountain and ocean vistas, and multiple awards for exceptional course design. It's described as "rugged" and some say it has more sand than any other course on Maui but hey who doesn't need some practice with that. Bonnie loves this course.
Wailea's Emerald Course is a true resort course with lush flowing plants, beautiful vistas and rolling hills. I actually tire more on this course than the gold but most women and tourists in general love it. It shares a proshop, driving range and Gannon's restaurant with the Gold Course. Don't miss the longest happy hour on Maui at the RED BAR special sunset views over the first hole are worth the price.
Wailea's Blue Course (the Old Blue) is a classic course. Wide fairways mean it's more fun for Bonnie to play with Frank because he spends less time searching for lost balls. This is one of the few courses on Maui to offer a residential setting from $300K condos to $20M+ homes sometimes it's hard to keep your eye on the ball. And the views wow! I think this is great island golf offering lush fairways, fragrant landscaping, greens with a bit of bite, lovely lakes, & classic coral sand bunkers. Oh yes and then there is Manoli's Bar & Grill for the 19th hole one of Matt's favorites for happy hour or a drink anytime. Walkable from most hotels too.
Maui Nui Golf Club (formerly Elleair) has some of the best deals on Maui. Located on south west corner of Piilani Hwy & Lipoa not far from the Safeway Shopping center the have a great pro shop, club rentals and repairs, a good restaurant with amaizing views and good happy hour. Maui Nui is just down the hill from the Maui Brewing Company. All their beers are on draft and the setting is amazing love the Bikini Blonde & happy hour here too.
Isthmus Courses
There are 3 courses here between Maalaea and Wailuku or Kahului. These are some amazing tests of golf with wind, mountain side and more. Best played in the early morning.
Not far from the airport in Kahului is the Dunes at Maui Lani (on Kuihelani Hwy 380) The Dunes is the only golf course in Hawaii built on naturally occurring dune terrain Lots of variation here with a blend in feel of Hawaii, northern Michigan and Scotland. Great multi round deals here.
The King Kamehameha Golf is a private club with some limited tee times for prospective members. The clubhouse is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and stands on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains visible as you head to your condo from the airport.
Just below it is another excellent course Kahili. This is a perfect name for the course as it stands at the entry to and guards the King (Kamehameha) course. Traditionally the Kahili is a cylinder of feathers attached to a long pole, and was a sacred symbol of Hawaiian royalty. The Kings (or Queens) guards were the bearers of this royal standard. Kahili is unique as it a mostly side hill course for those needing practice on that shot. And you will see NeNe here the Hawaiian goose, the national bird.
Up-Country Golf
One of my favorite courses is Pukulani. Located in Makawao the high views are amazing and it's an interesting course one of the few (along with the Dunes and Old Blue courses that have homes viewable from the fairways. Specials on Thursday mean sub $70 rounds including the cart. Rolling hills and enough rain so the course is well maintained. Pro shop and restaurant are good too but be sure to check the weather and look for clouds on Haleakala if you don't want to play in the rain.
West Side Golf
Ka'anapali boasts 2 courses. Guests in hotels and condos in the resort get special rates.
Royal Ka'anapali Course on the NW side of Lahaina was home of the Wendy's Champion SKINS GAME from 2008 to 2011 and is a demanding course mostly inland with ocean views. With its recent upgrades, guests can enjoy this demanding course from one of four sets of tee.
Ka'anapali Kai Golf Course is in the heart of Ka'anapali and is known as the more "strategic" course. What does that mean?
Kapalua
The Bay Course (Kapalua Resorts championship ocean course) has hosted over 20 major professional tournaments. Known for its breathtaking 17th hole, the only hole to play over the ocean on Maui, it should certainly be on the "must play" list for any golfer visiting Maui.
Kapalua's Plantation Course is the site of the PGA TOUR's Sentry Tournament of Champions each January and is consistently ranked as the #1 course in Hawaii I've got to play it some time but rates at over $350/round ruin it's appeal for me. Give me Wailea and any course for nearly half the price.
North Shore
Waiehu is a true neighborhood club owned by Maui Coutny. Sharing the beachfront with Waiehu Beach Park, means gorgeous beaches and spray from the pounding surf . Rates for local residents (especially the seniors) are lowest I have ever seen. Not a manicured private club but well worth the experience.

Other Activities on Maui
Whale Watching on Maui
Humpback whales migrate to the warm shallow waters near Maui each winter from November to May with peak season running January to March. The area between West Maui and the nearby island of Lanai is the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. It is possible to see whales breaching and tail slapping from shore (I've seen breaches from both Wailea's Ekahi Village and the Gold Golf Course) but the most exciting and interesting whale watching happens on the water.
Surfing on Maui
With millions of wave-riding visitors, Maui is known as a surfer's paradise.Learning to surf on Maui is a must do. With its gentle breaks and plethora of surf schools, our island is built for learning to surf. Both the South and West side of Maui have numerous breaks made for long boarding. The gradual slope of the ocean contour at these spots make for a gently breaking wave perfect for getting you up and going. Most of our surf schools on Maui guarantee you'll stand up the first time you take a lesson. Many will also rent you a board if you want to try surfing by yourself.
Snorkeling on Maui
You can snorkel off of most any beaches on Maui!!!Snorkelling is a great way to experience the amazing variety and colors of tropical fish, sea anemones and coral just below the surface of the water. If you are lucky, you may even see a sea turtle or two. There are places all over the island where you can rent or buy a mask and snorkel. Fins aren't necessary, but some folks like them as they make it easier to move around. In addition, a small kick board can be useful; as this will allow you to float without a lot of effort.
Hiking on Maui
Hiking Lava fields, the Haleakala moonscape, lush rain forests of the Iao Valley, water falls on the road to Hana or the beaches... exploring Maui on foot yields much fun and many surprises.
