Best Coffee in South Maui April 25, 2016

Oh how we love our coffee!

Well some of us, at least! I recently read a statistic that North Americans drink the majority of the world’s coffee. Guess what, in addition to beaches and sun and adventure, Maui also has coffee. Specifically, coffee beans are grown here on Maui. Some of the different varieties grown are Maui Moka beans, yellow caturra, red catuai and typica. The Maui Grown Coffee Company in Lahaina has some great information about the different beans on their website.  Their store is located under the smoke stack in Lahaina (turn at the first Shell when coming into Lahaina from Kihei) and are closed Sundays.

But this blog is about Kihei coffee shops.

After all, who wants to drive up to Lahaina for their cup of morning joe? Yes, we have Starbucks and yes we have Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf here in South Maui, but why not support some of the local mom and pop places and drink locally roasted coffee?

  1. Java Café in Central Kihei’s Azeka Plaza. This is an internet café (print tickets or boarding passes if needed). They carry an array of locally grown coffees – great place have them all in one spot and pick up some souvenirs/thank you’s to take home.
  2. S&Q – conveniently located right along on South Kihei Road in Rainbow Plaza (next to Café o Lei). They also have amazing shave ice (that’s another blog post). They have some seating, but grab your coffee and cross the street to enjoy the ocean view at Kamaole 1 beach park. Sit or get some ‘exercise’ walking along the beach! Just don’t walk too fast – you may spill that coffee!
  3. Lava Java in Kihei Kalama Village across from Kalama Park. They do their own roasting and offer free wi-fi to those of you who don’t have US data plans on your smart phones.
  4. Cinnamon Roll Fair at 2463 S Kihei Road (below where Dennys used to be on South Kihei Road). Okay, so they don’t make fancy coffees but if you need some sugar with that coffee, pick up some of their goodies! Cash only!
  5. If you are staying in North Kihei, don’t miss the Sugar Beach Bake Shop. OMG. Wonderful treats, serving locally roasted Maui Oma coffee.
  6. Wanting more of a sit-down place? Fabiani’s (yes, the pizza place) has great coffee and amazing deserts too. My favorite – is the lilikoi roulade with meringue.
  7. Another golden nugget is the breakfast joint, Kihei Cafe’. On South Kihei road across from Kalama Beach Park. They have several fresh roasted coffee and also have great breakfast. Bring your appetite and cash, no credit cards accepted.
