Makena Landing: Old Makena Road, Maui, HI
6 miles south of Kihei Town Center and 2.2 miles south of the Wailea stop light, is Old Makena Road. Take it down to the beach. You have now found Makena Landing. Here there is a nice secluded park with plenty of trees for shade and chickens for amusement. A great spot for a shore dive, riddled with caverns, archways, and a bubble cave or fishing, swimming & snorkeling. There are restrooms and a shower at the beach park which is made up of a sand beach, rocky beach, and a small park that is nice for picnics and gatherings. The shore slopes gently into the deeper water, and the absence of a dramatic break make it ideal for children and families.
In the 1800's Makena Landing served as the dock for the famous Rose Ranch (now the Ulupalakua Ranch) located in the hills of Upcountry above Makena. Today there is no road to the ranch but the beach is an excellent launch point for touring Turtle Town. Founded in 1832 and built in 1855 Keawala'i Church on Old Makena Road is a favorite wedding spot. Couples come from all over the world to marry here in a truly Hawaiian ceremony. And the beach is just steps away for wedding photos.
Near by the Prince Hotel (south) or Kea Lani Hotel (north) offer fine dining, spas and more. The Makena golf and tennis facilities are outstanding. Offering 36 holes of golf, a driving range, several tennis courts with pro shop.
Recently some luxury homes have been developed across from the Landing. They afford an affordable opportunity for larger families or groups sleeping 6 with 3 bedrooms. $650+/day depending on season, number of renters, maid service.
