Makena is tucked into the desert landscape of South Maui. In ancient times, Hawaiians settled in small villages along the Makena shore. It was just south of here in 1776 that French explorer Jean-Francois de La Pérouse, became the first non-Polynesian to set foot on Maui. The place where he landed is named after him: La Pérouse Bay. During the California Gold Rush, many San Francisco-bound ships coming up from Cape Horn stopped for fresh fruits and vegetables at Makena. Later, cattle from Ulupalakua and other ranches were shipped to market in Honolulu from the old Makena Landing.

The end of the Wailea ocean front walk just south of Wailea's Kea Lani Hotel marks the beginning of Makena. The 8 story Polo Beach club sits right on the beach and is one of only two vacation rental approved resorts in Makena. Private homes & estates line some of the beach front as you head south. Keawala'i Church on Old Makena Road is a favorite wedding spot.

In Hawaiian, makena is the word for abundance and that certainly applies to Makena Surf. Built in 1984 on 15 spectacular ocean front acres at Po'olenalena Beach on the Makena coastline. Makena Surf's gated resort is still private, but not as secluded as it once was.

6 miles south of Kihei Town Center and 2.2 miles south of the Wailea stop light at Ike, is Old Makena Road. Take it down to the beach. You have now found Makena Landing.

Here there is a nice secluded park with plenty of trees for shade and chickens for amusement. A great spot for a shore dive, riddled with caverns, archways, and a bubble cave or fishing, swimming & snorkeling. There are restrooms and a shower at the beach park which is made up of a sand beach, rocky beach, and a small park that is nice for picnics and gatherings. The shore slopes gently into the deeper water, and the absence of a dramatic break make it ideal for children and families.

Recently some luxury homes have been developed across from the Landing. They afford an affordable opportunity for larger families or groups sleeping 6-8 with 3 bedrooms, spectacular ocean views, walls of windows that disappear and private pool for a true tropical life style.
